What to Expect at Your First Boxing Fitness Class
Nervous about your first boxing class? Here's a detailed walkthrough of what happens at Rumble Boxing Alpharetta so you can walk in with confidence.
Walking into any new fitness class can feel intimidating, and boxing fitness might seem especially daunting if you have never thrown a punch before. We get it. But here is the truth: every single one of our members was a first-timer once, and every single one of them will tell you the same thing — they wish they had started sooner. This guide walks you through exactly what to expect at your first Rumble Boxing Alpharetta class so you can show up feeling confident and ready to have a great time.
Before You Arrive
You do not need to bring much. Wear comfortable workout clothes — athletic shorts or leggings and a moisture-wicking top are ideal. Bring a water bottle if you have one, though we also have water available at the studio. You do not need to bring your own gloves or wraps. We provide everything you need, including boxing gloves and hand wraps that are cleaned and sanitized between uses. If you prefer your own gear, you are welcome to bring it or purchase wraps at the front desk.
We recommend arriving about 15 minutes early for your first class. This gives you time to check in, sign a quick waiver, get fitted with gloves, and meet your trainer. Our studio is located at 6110 North Point Parkway in Alpharetta, with free parking right in the Target lot next to Sleep Number. Finding us is easy — look for the Rumble signage and you are there.
The Studio Setup
When you walk in, you will notice that the studio is divided into two main areas. One side has rows of aqua-filled heavy bags — these are what you will be punching during the boxing rounds. The other side is the floor area, equipped with benches, free weights, and resistance bands for the strength-training portions of the workout. The lighting is dim with an energizing atmosphere, and the music is always pumping. Think of it as part nightclub, part gym, and entirely focused on helping you have the best workout of your day.
You will be assigned a number that corresponds to a specific bag and a specific floor station. This means you always know exactly where to go, and you never have to worry about wandering around looking lost. Everything is organized so you can focus entirely on the workout.
The Warm-Up
Class begins with a brief warm-up that gets your heart rate up and loosens your muscles. Your trainer will lead you through dynamic stretches, light shadowboxing, and basic movement patterns. This is where you will learn the six basic punches used throughout the class: the jab, cross, lead hook, rear hook, lead uppercut, and rear uppercut. Each punch is numbered one through six, and the trainer will call out combinations using those numbers during the workout.
Do not worry about memorizing everything right away. The trainers demonstrate every combination before you do it, and they walk the floor throughout the class to offer corrections and encouragement. There is zero judgment, and everyone around you is too focused on their own workout to notice if you mix up a three and a four.
The 10-Round Workout
The core of every Rumble class is our signature 10-round format. You will alternate between rounds on the heavy bag and rounds on the floor. A typical structure looks like this:
- Bag rounds: Your trainer calls out punch combinations set to the beat of the music. You will throw jabs, crosses, hooks, and uppercuts in sequences that build in complexity as the class progresses. The bag provides resistance, so every punch is working your arms, shoulders, back, and core.
- Floor rounds: Between bag rounds, you move to the floor station for strength exercises. These might include dumbbell rows, push-ups, squat presses, ab work, or resistance band exercises. The floor rounds complement the boxing by targeting muscles from different angles and adding strength-building stimulus.
Each round is typically about three minutes, with brief transitions in between. The whole class lasts 45 minutes from warm-up to cool-down. It goes by fast — most first-timers are surprised when the trainer announces the final round.
Intensity Is in Your Hands
One of the best things about Rumble is that you control your own intensity. The trainer will push you and encourage you to dig deeper, but there is no scoreboard, no competition with the person next to you, and no pressure to lift a specific weight or punch at a specific speed. If you need to take a breather during a round, take it. If you want to go lighter on the weights, go lighter. Your first class is about learning the format, getting comfortable with the movements, and having fun. The intensity will naturally increase as you build skill and confidence over the coming weeks.
That said, do not be surprised if you are sore the next day. Boxing fitness engages muscles you probably have not used in a while — especially through your shoulders, back, and core. That soreness is completely normal and a sign that your body is adapting to a new challenge. It gets better after your second and third class as your muscles adjust.
The Cool-Down
After the final round, your trainer will guide you through a cool-down that includes stretching for your shoulders, arms, hips, and legs. This is an important part of the workout that helps reduce soreness and improve flexibility. Take deep breaths, let your heart rate come down, and take a moment to appreciate the work you just put in.
After Class
After class, hang around for a minute. Chat with your trainer about how the class felt, ask any questions about form or technique, and connect with other members. The Rumble community is genuinely welcoming, and you will find that the people around you are happy to share tips and encouragement.
Our front desk team will check in with you to see how your first class went and can answer any questions about membership options, class schedules, or upcoming events. We want you to feel like part of the Rumble family from day one.
Common First-Timer Questions
Will I look silly? No. Everyone is focused on their own workout, and beginners are in every single class. You are not being judged — you are being welcomed.
Do I need to be in shape first? Absolutely not. Our classes meet you where you are. Whether you have not worked out in years or you are a daily gym-goer looking for something new, boxing fitness adapts to your current fitness level.
Will I get hit? No. This is not sparring. You hit the bag, the bag does not hit back. There is zero contact with other people.
How often should I come? We recommend starting with two to three classes per week to build a consistent habit. As your fitness improves, many members increase to four or five sessions weekly.
